I'm Not Flexible Enough For Yoga!
BackPosted by Julie Dore (Chinmayi) on 12 Dec 2019
Oh the Irony!
I got talking to a lady the other day who said “I can’t do yoga because I’m not flexible enough.” I’ve heard this soo many times!
It’s a contradiction, right there! A bit like saying,
“I can’t eat because I’m too hungry.” Or
“I can’t put my coat on because it’s too cold”
You come to yoga BECAUSE you want to be more flexible.
If you have knee pain, back pain, shoulder issues or tight hips, you need to s-t-r-e-t-c-h those muscles. Regularly. Then you can be more flexible AND your aches and pains can magically heal and subside.
Yoga in my life
Don’t get me wrong, I wish I was more physically flexible. But to be honest, I know that if it was a priority for me, I could be.
My practice is usually short and sweet. But it is almost every day. I focus on the poses that stretch my body, where it’s stiff.
On easier days, when I get into a full practice or when I’m teaching, I realise that a little more time helps my flexibility even more.
The point is we simply don’t have to be flexible to join a class.
When to Start
I think a lot of people worry that they will look or maybe feel silly if they cannot touch their toes or sit cross-legged. But that is the point. You will, eventually. A skilled teacher will immediately have modifications to offer you to help you on the way to the poses.
Furthermore, when you do come to class, you’ll soon realise that no-one is looking at you. They are also learning how to ‘go within,’ because this is exactly where the flexibility starts.
There is something magical about practicing in a group. And I can guarantee that even the most experienced person in the class is learning something new.
So if you’re holding back from a class because you’re not flexible, please let that go!
The gift of yoga and all of its benefits are yours for the practising…
