Movement as meditation

Sometimes people new to yoga are a bit wary of the idea of meditation. Others feel that meditation is just what comes at the end of a class. In my ashtanga and mindfulness blended approach you don't have to wait to the end of your practice to do your meditation. Let your whole practice be a meditation by becoming fully aware of each movement, even the smallest subtlest ones. Let your mind be calmed by the flow of your movement, by the focus of each breath, using the physical movement to allow the emotional shift away from tension to a calmness of thought. By allowing your whole practice to be a moving meditation you can calm your chattering mind. Try doing some sun salutations - surya namaskar - with your eyes closed to really feel that focus of mindful movement.
