Senior Yoga Teacher (SYT Yoga Alliance UK)

Profile

I have been teaching Yoga officially since 1997, and as such, am a Senior Yoga Teacher with over 10,000 hours of teaching contact behind me (registered with The Yoga Alliance UK). I originally began teaching yoga whilst I lived as a Naturalist Guide in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador (1994-1996), and in Eilat, Israel where I was as a yoga and free-diving tent-dweller. During three years of living, travelling and working abroad I studied and practised Astanga yoga with Sri K Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India, which culminated in 1997 when I completed an intensive Yoga Teacher Training course with Maty Ezraty and Lisa Walford at Yoga Works in Santa Monica, California. Since returning to the UK I have continued to take yoga and mindfulness workshops and courses with the world\'s most famous teachers, all too many to name here. As a Senior Yoga Teacher (SYT YAUK) I have a wealth of experience which I have gained from nearly 20 years of teaching yoga. In that time I have pursued studies in Anatomy and Physiology, completing a diploma in Sports Massage at St Mary\'s College, University of London, in Twickenham, and Yoga Therapy for musculo-skeletal conditions through Yoga Campus. Most recently over the past year (2013-2014) I have taken several full day courses in dissection of human cadavers at a London hospital with Anatomy on Cadavers Ltd. These days have given me more insight into the anatomy of movement and the understated importance of \"fascinating fascia\" otherwise known as \"the fuzz\", than I could ever have anticipated, expected, or hoped for, and it has caused my learning curve to soar. Along the way I have also become certified in the Gyrotonic Expansion System. I have been teaching this intelligent system of movement to individuals since 2008. This system of movement has simply reinforced everything I have learnt from studies and dissection on human cadavers, and further reinforces and flavours my understanding, practice and teaching of yoga. I teach small and detailed,workshop-style yoga classes as well as private yoga sessions, and Gyrotonic, in a purely intuitive and spontaneous way based on the years of experience and practice of both yoga, meditation and Gyrotonic. Teaching small groups and individuals is my speciality. I am fascinated by patterns of movement in individual\'s bodies, and through my experiential knowledge due to the learning I have undertaken, I have, as a result, great insight into the human body and movement; function and dysfunction. I see, not only with my eyes, but as importantly, with my hands. I am a specialist particularly when it comes to teaching on a one-to-one basis and therefore I am able to intuitively tailor these classes to each person\'s needs. On Meditation: I have been a practising Buddhist since 2005, having taken a 2-year Foundation course with Geshe Tashi Tsering in the Psychology and Philosophy of Buddhism (2003-2005). I love anything to do with the study of \"Mind\" and because of that I have continued to study and practise meditation in depth. I have taken courses in Mindfulness, Compassion and Insight with with Rob Nairn and The Mindfulness Association, Dr Tamara Russell (neuroscientist and clinical psychologist) and her \"Body-in-Mind Training, and in \"shamatha\" (calm-abiding/single-pointed focus) with the world expert in this practice, Dr B Alan Wallace, director of the Santa Barbara Institute of Consciousness Studies. Presently I am taking \"The Foundation of Buddhist Thought\" course at Jamyang Tibetan Buddhist Centre London with Geshe Tashi Tsering, for the second time (2012-2014) to further my understanding of these complex esoteric subjects. I have also jointly taught a short course on Buddhism there. In the 1980s I studied Shiatsu for 3 years with The European Shiatsu School, and trained in the Martial Arts in the 1ate 80s and 90s, particularly the Internal Arts of TaiChi and Pushing Hands, and in 1992 I gained a Bronze medal in the first ever TaiChi Championships held in the UK. I live in the Richmond and Twickenham area, though I teach as far afield as Primrose Hill (Triyoga), Notting Hill, Ealing and Waterloo.
