I remember the first time I tried yoga and the shock when I realised I couldn't bend down to touch my toes. Whilst other people in the class were performing the moves with ease and grace I was sweating buckets and felt like a hefalump. ​ It was a rather dispiriting event. The main reason I decided to start was because I was suffering from chronic lower back ache. Although I didn't have any serious issues, years of carrying bags and children had taken their toll on my back and my core had all but vanished. ​ I will be honest and say that the first 12 months were hard work. My body was so out of condition and I just did not possess any internal strength. However, I loved the fact that there wasn't any stress on the joints and that this was a non competitive form of exercise.
